In 1966, the United States was embroiled in a controversial war in Vietnam. This controversy unfortunately manifested itself in civil unrest, divisiveness, and anti-American protests in cities and college campuses across the country. The most poignant and damaging of these acts was the poor treatment of returning soldiers. Those unpatriotic acts and atrocities committed against the American soldier prompted former Mayor P.B. Edwards, Jr., a decorated veteran of World War II who was permanently wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, with the cooperation of the Port Wentworth Missionary Alliance Church, to establish this day to recognize America and particularly the American soldier -- hence was born "Stand Up for America Day" in 1971.
Port Wentworth's annual Stand up for America Day is held every year on the last Saturday in April to honor America's service men and women, past and present. The streets of Port Wentworth are filled with a parade, music, arts, crafts, food and kiddie rides. This homegrown celebration of our American heritage also includes fireworks that light up the city's night sky. In 2008, the Port Wentworth Chamber of Commerce started the fishing tournament as a way to raise funds for our veterans. The Chamber of Commerce has worked very hard to create a fun tournament for our anglers. As an angler, you help to provide funds to assist the Purple Heart Veterans of Chatham County. Proceeds from the Savannah River Spring Classic go to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Association, Chatham County Auxillary.
